A chronological view of research, collaboration and visits across science, industry and conservation.
RECENT ACTIVITY
Science happens between disciplines — and between places.
A running view of the work around Kyros Kairos, including research, collaboration, translation and the conversations that lead to new projects.
Safeguarding Anthropocene Tropical Forests
Excited to attend this Royal Society conference, continuing our work in the biodiversity and conservation space and hoping to meet key people in this important discussion about how cryopreservation can help protect tropical forests. Many tropical species produce seeds with a high water content that makes conventional freezing difficult, creating an important preservation challenge.
Cytiva ATLAS Conference
Joining old colleagues from Cytiva and industry leaders across biotechnology and the life sciences for discussions on how to commercialise research, alongside workshops on the key challenges involved in moving science into practice. Pictured: me being trained on Cytiva’s product offering using a lab created in virtual reality. Part of the future of science.
Perspectives on Ageing and Care
Speaking with people whose experience of hospice and care work stretches back to the 1950s, exploring how experiences and perceptions of ageing and later life have changed over the intervening decades.
Attended the Rathbones Charities Conference 2026: Future Resilience. Workshops and discussions explored how AI, changes in the bond market and the global economy affect investment and future planning for charities and organisations working to improve outcomes for people and the environment.
Visited collaborators, biobanks and organisations in Manchester, Leeds, London, Essex, Edinburgh and Oxford. Meetings included SMEs, manufacturers, academics and others working across the sector — understanding the problems they face, the solutions already being developed and where new scientific or technical approaches might help.
Visiting Collaborators Across the Carolinas
Spent several days visiting collaborators working in cryopreservation in Charleston, alongside friends and colleagues working in biobanking at Duke University in North Carolina. A chance to catch up, exchange ideas and discuss some of the new projects and approaches we’re developing.
LBF8 Retreat, North Carolina
Attended the week-long LBF8 residential retreat in North Carolina, focused on ways to accelerate progress in understanding and ultimately treating ageing. The programme brought together scientists, start-up companies, venture capitalists and others from around the world working on the longevity challenge.
Marine Cryopreservation in Vigo
Visited collaborators at the University of Vigo to discuss marine cryopreservation and approaches to preserving material from marine species. The visit also happened to coincide with the solar eclipse, which I viewed with collaborators.
Global Catchment Launches
Global Catchment officially launched, bringing together scientific evidence, biodiversity, environmental decision-making and approaches for demonstrating genuine environmental impact. Work is now developing alongside applications for further funding.
Took part in the Kew Gardens roundtable “From Knowledge to Nature Recovery: Turning Biodiversity Intelligence into Action.” The session brought together leaders from science, technology, finance, funding and conservation to explore a shared challenge: how to unlock the full value of biodiversity data and technology and apply it at scale to address global issues.
Finance the Future at Kew Gardens
Co-facilitated a Finance the Future workshop at Kew Gardens, bringing together academics, financial-market experts and bankers to explore new approaches to financing science and biodiversity. An engaging collaborative day of discussion was followed by a guided tour of Kew Gardens.
Transport and Shipping of Cell Therapies
Gave a seminar on the transport and shipping of cell therapies as part of a joint webinar between the International Stem Cell Banking Initiative (ISCBI) and the Society for Low Temperature Biology (SLTB), looking at the practical and scientific challenges involved in moving cell therapies reliably between sites.
PRESENTING & CONNECTING
Sharing science across disciplines.
From cryobiology and fertility preservation to carbon emissions and endangered species, communicating the science is part of moving it into practice.
Sharing research with scientific and professional audiences.Connecting fundamental science with practical challenges.Conversations across cryobiology, industry and translation.
SCIENTISTS OF THE FUTURE
Curiosity starts early.
Science is not only about the next experiment. It is also about making laboratories, questions and discovery feel accessible to the next generation.
KEEP IN TOUCH
Working on something that overlaps?
We are always interested in conversations that connect strong science with a route to real-world use.
